Launched in June 2018 on the American channel Paramount, “Yellowstone” has established itself as the most watched television series in the United States for the 2021-2022 season. But what is this fiction about that tickles the audience records of “Game of Thornes” or “The Walking Dead” on the other side of the Atlantic?
A television phenomenon. Relatively little known in France, “Yellowstone” has become an essential series in the American audiovisual scene since its launch in June 2018 on the Paramount channel. According to the US site Variety, it has just established itself for the first time as the most watched series in the entire country, ahead of the behemoths that are “This is us” or “NCIS”. The first spin-off released in December 2021, called 1883, is also a success. So much so that two more have been ordered.
What is the series about?
Played by Kevin Costner, “Yellowstone” follows the adventures of the Dutton family, who own the largest ranch in the United States near Yellowstone Park, Montana. A gold mine that attracts many wishes, and therefore many problems to this family of farmers who pass the land from generation to generation.
The fiction skillfully manages to mix the modern western with the soap opera -in the manner of the Young and the Restless- by staging a family whose balance is threatened by outsiders, but also by the decisions of some of its members who do not they are, or they are not. longer, in tune with the way of managing the patriarch, John Dutton.
“Yellowstone” is undeniably based on a very conservative vision of a fantasy America with a discourse very focused on traditional values and the image of the American cowboy, with his toxic virility. However, it has the merit of giving a different voice to Native Americans, with a cast of Native American actors never seen on American television, and manages to defend a certain idea of ecology and nature protection. Even if the statement may seem too simplistic or cartoonish.
However, ‘Yellowstone’ plays today in the big leagues, and sweeps the audience records recorded by essential series such as Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead. The season 4 finale gathered more than 9.3 million viewers last February.
The fifth, expected in the fall of 2023, will be divided into two parts of seven episodes each. A total of 14 episodes compared to the ten of the previous seasons. Proof that “Yellowstone” continues to gain momentum.
